As a special session for the Hunter Central Coast Innovation Festival, we will be transporting participants to the studios of NBN Television for the final session.

A Q&A session will take place facilitated by NBN news reader Natasha Beyesdorf. Our panel will consist of Brian McGuigan (McGuigan Wines), Dr Eileen Doyle (Doyle Partners), Jeff Phillips (Varley Engineering) and Helen Lee (St Phillips Christian College).

Let’s Make Better Mistakes Tomorrow - A Journey Through Innovation and Collaboration.

In 1856, William Henry Perkin, an eighteen-year-old English chemist, was searching for a cure for malaria, a synthetic quinine, and accidentally discovered the first synthetic dye.

He found that the oxidation of aniline could color silk. From a coal tar derivative he made a reddish purple dye. The brilliant purple was called mauve.

This discovery resulted in additional research with coal tar derivatives and other organic compounds and an entire new industry of synthetic dyes was born.
